Nature With Science

Potty Training With The Wizdog and Porch Potty

  • No more puppy tearing up the potty pad
  • No more wet paw tracks throughout the house

I have had great success with puppy potty training by using the following simple techniques, as puppies and dogs are very clean by nature and prefer to potty away from their sleeping and eating quarters, using the same spot to eliminate.

At about 3 weeks of age I introduce the Wizdog to the young litter. Amazingly enough, the little ones automatically know where to go, as I place a piddle pad between the tray and the

snuggly fitted top grate. This has been the most brilliant tool for potty training very young puppies, until they are old enough to use the outdoors, or for use during very harsh winters, where it may not be safe to leave them outdoors for more than a couple minutes.

Once the pup is conditioned to use the WizDog, you may save money be eliminating the use of the piddle pad between the tray and the grate.

If you don't have a doggy door and cannot return home in time to let your dog outdoors to relieve himself/herself, knowing you have a WizDog at home, and a dog that knows it's ok to go indoors on the wizdog while you are away, certainly removes any cause for stress over the dog who may otherwise be in misery, or worry about your carpets getting soiled.

As a breeder with occasional pups, I have 2 WizDogs, ensuring I always have a clean one down, while the other is getting easily washed in the back ward. This is a system that every breeder should consider a must!

As a dog trainer, I have many dog owners asking for simple solutions to potty training a new puppy/dog.

While there are many techniques to potty training, I find the Porch Potty to be the wisest  outdoor choice, as your pup gets older, or if you reside in an upper floor apartment or condo. The Porch Potty teaches your dog early on to do his/her business on his own special grass.  As he grows, teaching your dog to eliminate outdoors is the ideal method, and now, very feasable. Whether you live in a house, apartment, condo or skyrise, Porch Potty is the ultimate answer to dog potty training/potty habits.

With the Porch Potty, your new pup will always know to go potty outside in his "special area" .

An ideal setting to keep the Porch Potty, is on the patio, or back porch, under a covered patio roof, providing green grass year round, protecting both the grass and your puppy from the snow and harsh outdoor elements.

Training your dog/puppy to use the Porch Potty will ensure your beautiful lawn in the garden to remain free of "dead spots" and "scattered surprises that you don't want to step in".

During potty training, a new puppy will need to be taken out much more often than a more mature dog, as small puppies do not have strong muscle control over either their bladder or bowels. They simply have to go, when they have to go! If they have an accident, it is not their fault. Taking them out at least every hour would be a good schedule to begin them on.

When you are not able to supervise with a very watchful eye, placing your pup in his crate will ensure no accidents throughout the house. He will let you know when he has to go, as he does not want to soil his safe place/private domain.

The most important times to take your dog/puppy out to potty are:

1.) As soon as he/she wakes up. After a nights sleep, or even a nap, you pup will need to check out the potty area before anything else.

2.) After eating. Dog's have a much shorter digestive tract than humans, making it necessary to relieve themselves within 1/2 hour of eating. Some dog's may need to go 5 minutes after eating, others 15 minutes, or even 1/2 hour. Watch your dog's behavior in order to become more familiar with his digestive habits in order to better know his/her system and requirements.

3.) After (or even during) a vigerous play time. All that exercising and moving around will let him/her realize "uh oh...I gotta go!" Watch for your pup to change stance and begin to quickly seek the spot to go.

With a young puppy, you may want to carry him/her to the porch potty, rather than calling or coaxing the pup along. More than likely the puppy will "squat & go" along the way. If you instead, pick the pup up and carry him to the proper area, then place him where you wish for him to go, he will tighten his muscles, and wait until you put him down.

Be sure to gently praise him for going in the correct place.

It is counter productive to punish your dog for having accidents. He will only learn to distrust you, causing a poor relationship. If you use punishment, he will not understand the depth of "why". He will learn to get "sneaky" to avoid punishment and find a well hidden spot that he thinks you will not find.

Potty train with positive reinforcement for best results!

The Story of Porch Potty

Porch Potty was invented by Brandon Kennington, a dog owner living in a condo in the big city. After a few months of waking up multiple times a night to take his new puppy out of the building and down 3 flights of stairs, he asked: "Why can't I put a patch of grass on my balcony"? Fifty three prototypes later, and a patient puppy, he designed the first automated grass litter box for dogs. His design made it easy for anyone to set up and start using for less than any other similar dog potty on the market. Dog lover's all over the world began ordering the unique invention to use for their fluffy friend. It turns out Brandon was not alone in the quest to find a convenient way to relieve their dog without leaving the comfort of home.

Porch Potty is chosen by "Tillman The Skateboarding Bull Dog"

If Tillman isn't doing a TV show or an endorsment showing, he is out doing what he loves most - skateboarding. When Tillman needs to take a potty break he uses the Porch Potty. If you watched the Rose Bowl Parade this year, you might have seen his float where he skateboards around an oval track. His owner chose to place a Porch Potty in the middle of the float for those times when Tillman has "to go". He also has two other Porch Potties that travel with him where ever he goes. TV Shows, Public Events, Movie Sets, you name it. He always has a Porch Potty near by.
