Skin and coat condition is simply a reflection of what's going on inside. A cat or dog sporting a beautiful glossy coat and healthy skin, reflects healthy goings on internally. Unhealthy skin & coat, reflects unhealthy internal life.
Dull, brittle hair, massive shedding, scratching, ear infections and more, are directly related to less than an optimum diet...a diet that does not agree with the body.
It's essential to apply the use of natural and healthy grooming products, such as our organic Spa product line. However, it's just as important to feed the inside with health, such as a Life's Abundance diet. A healthy diet is the most important factor of healthy skin and coat.
The two go hand in hand. It makes no sense to feed a high quality premium health food, and then bathe with a harsh chemically based product that irritates a healthy skin and coat. The same it true in reverse ~ It makes no sense to use natural high quality grooming products, trying to achieve a healthy skin & coat, and feed an inferior food.
The ingredients in our grooming products are selected for optimum skin & coat health, as the skin is the last organ to receive nutritional value from food. The two together will provide maximum value to your companion animal. |
You are what you eat!
This holds true for all living things, however, I wish more pet owners took this more seriously. It's my belief that dog and cat health food is the most important “prevention to illness” that a pet will consume in his/her lifetime.
I'm sure you’ve heard this well known “You are what you eat” quote before. It's as true for our pets, as it is true for us humans. The proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins that your pet eats are all fuel to replace or replenish the body’s needs for growth, healing itself, and maintaining minute-to-minute and second-to-second chemical events in the billions of individual body cells.
Nutrition is serious health business. The public is not well served by exclusively feeding products from companies without any real commitment to health... or knowledge of how to even achieve that.
The Beginning Of Commercial Pet Foods
Commercial dog and cat foods were first created in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Little was known about pet nutrition then, so it's no wonder that the foods were very poor quality. Pet food was simply a way to get rid of extra grains that were being discarded from the farming industry. It wasn’t until later, when shown through time that dogs and cats systems needed meat, that meat was later added. Since meat was a more costly commodity, only meat that could not be sold in the human market was used in pet food.
Today we have the USDA, a federal government agency, that is responsible for keeping our human food safe. They have standards for meat and crops to be consumed by people and anything that fails these standards must be removed and discarded from the human food production line. Guess where it goes? It's very sad indeed that almost 100 years after the introduction of commercial pet foods we still have tumors, abscesses, spoiled super market discards (plastic wrap included), feet, beaks, guts, blood, etc., processed into pet food. The USDA refers to this meat as 4 D meat: dead, diseased, dying or decayed, and it's accepted to use this in dog and cat food. When looking at a label that reads, “animal by-product or animal by product meal” this may be all 4-D meat. The "animal" description might be; deer, racoon, skunk, euthanized pets (with flea collars intact, as it's too time consuming to remove them), or a variety of other 4D meats
Recently, well over 100 dogs died in the US from aflatoxin. This is a toxin that is produced by a fungus that predominately grows in grain (corn and wheat) and legumes (peanuts and soybeans). A common practice of dog food manufacturers is to add corn, wheat, gluten, soybean meal and peanut hulls. These are cheap forms of so called protein and fiber and are acceptable by AAFCO standards (USDA’s pet food standards). You might be asking yourself, if all these cheap fillers are easily digestible for cats and dogs, and "Why can't these manufacturers make a better pet food for our pets?"
HealthyPetNet, featuring Life's Abundance health food, holds proof that there can be, and is, a wholesome health food formulated for our pets. Yet most other pet food companies are now owned by Fortune 500 giants.
One of the largest rendering facilities is owned by Colgate Palmolive, who incidentally owns Hills Science Diet Pet Food. Iams is owned by Proctor & Gamble. Purina is owned by Nestle, Pedigree, Royal Canin, Whiskas, Cesar & Sheba are owned by Mars; and the list goes on and on. These companies are experts at two things: 1.) marketing and 2.) turning a profit for their stockholders. This appears good for business, but at the risk of your pet’s health?
Did you know that it's common for commercial dog and cat foods to be anywhere from 6 months, to more than 18 months old by the time it is purchased from a store? Much of this time the food may be sitting in a storage unit that is not climate controlled during hot summer months, or freezing winter months. Moisture may collect in these bags in both extreme cold and warm conditions, negatively altering the food quality and safety. How would you rate the nutritional value of food in a bag that is 6 + months old? What chemicals were put into the food to keep it from spoiling if it is this old? How safe are these products? Is there any nutritional value left in the food? Knowing all this, would you really want to feed your dog or cat such a product?
More Important Facts:
Dog and cat foods should have as the first listed ingredient; a declared specified meat, (such as, chicken) or more importantly specified meat meal (chicken meal is chicken meat with most of the water removed leaving an extremely high quality protein). The second ingredient should be a high quality protein/carbohydrate such as brown rice. Rich antioxidants, powerful probiotics, phytonutrients, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (fish oil), high quality vitamins and chelated minerals are great nutrients found in only a few available diets.
It’s very important to know how to read a label. Please, for the sake of your pet, don’t listen to a pet food store salesperson because they are just telling you what their boss told them to say or what the food company sales brochure tells them to say. * I will always remember hearing a feed store owner telling her customers that the best food she had was "whatever each customer could afford"! While most people working in these stores are well-intentioned, they are NOT canine\feline nutritionists. More than likely, these people couldn’t tell you the difference between a fatty acid and an amino acid. They have no business pretending to be nutritional counselors. So ask your holistic veterinarian or canine/feline nutritionist very direct questions about pet food. Be sure to read the label and ask what those words mean, if you are not sure.
* Back to the feed store owner who so casually explained to her customers, who wanted a sincere educated recommendation of what was best to feed their pets; Does anyone honestly think that anything of optimal and safe value would be in a 40# bag of dog food that costs $14.99?
I hope everyone can see that you either invest a little more now by providing optimal health, or you risk investing a lot more later, in veterinarian bills with a very ill campanion animal, who may or may not fully recover.
With a true health food diet, such as Life's Abundance, you are feeding a lesser amount of food daily, as the body recognizes the nutrition and absorbs it, utilizing every nutrient that was so caringly included in the formula. Feeling satisfied, your cat or dog will eat less. ~ Whereas, with a bag of food filled with cheap grains and dangerous cheap chemicals, the same pet would have been inclined to eat more food, as they never feel satisfied, due to their body not being able to recognize any nutrition to grab onto, thus over working the kidneys, trying to churn the garbage out. When organs are over worked, they tend to expire sooner than intended.
Many people ask what I feed and why:
As a Canine/Feline specialist and Dog Trainer, I always recommend to my clientele, diets that I personally feed exclusively to my dogs and cats. This is a holistic diet that has been made literally a couple weeks before I open the bag. I cringe at the thought of, consumers (not knowing better) purchasing food off the shelf that may have been made months or even years earlier; bags of pet food that contain harmful chemical preservatives.
I rely on the powerful components of real and natural food to help my pets grow and maintain healthy bodily function. This is a decision I take very seriously. I feel that nutrition is a vital part of keeping pets thriving, happy and healthy.
Do you really know what is in your dog’s or cat’s food? Does your dog of cat food contain any of the following?
•BHA, BHT, or Ethoxiquin (powerful chemical preservatives which have been shown to produce liver disease (including cancer) when fed over time. These chemicals are known carcinogens. •Artificial coloring and flavoring •Animal by-products •Corn, wheat, soybean, or peanut hulls
Some very healthy things you should look for in pet foods are:
•Chicken meal as the first ingredient The meat source should be specified, more than simply a generic "meat" •Brown rice as the second or third ingredient •Phytonutrients •Other Natural Antioxidants (not synthetic) •Probiotics (beneficial bacterial cultures that aid in digestion) •Fish Oil (Safe, highly rated, independant 3rd party inspected)
Eating sick foods will eventually produce sick bodies. Eating healthy foods will produce a healthy body. This should help explain how important nutrition is, and further explain how "we are what we eat". |

More breeders are seeing repeat incidence of complications with pregnancies and premature birth in their kennels; frequent C-section required; smaller litters; tiny, weaker or sick whelps and high rate of mortality. Learn how some breeders are improving the health of their animals resulting in larger and healthier litters. Pet owners often complain that their new puppy is sick with diarrhea, vomiting, runny eyes, ear infections and eating animal feces. A lot of money is spent on veterinary care and medication, often with less than desirable results.
Dr. T.J. Dunn DVM - "There is ample proof that today's pet dogs and cats DO NOT thrive on cheap, packaged, corn-based pet foods. Dogs and cats are primarily meat eaters; to fill them up with grain-based processed dry foods that barely meet minimum daily nutrient requirements has proven to be a mistake."
British Journal of Small Animal Practice"A growing number of veterinarians state that processed pet food is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food supresses the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. This research, initially conducted by Dr Tom Lonsdale, was researched further by the Australian Veterinary Association and proven to be correct."

Some pet guardians have gone to feeding a raw diet, commonly called the "Barf Diet". The name alone turns me away from it. There are several problems with this diet., with the main one being parasites. ALL grazing animals have parasites. Parasites and their eggs remain live, even while frozen. When livestock animals are fed to our pets in a raw form, we are feeding them live parasites, who are looking for a host to attach to and begin to feed off of and grow.
A dog needs much more than raw meat in order to sustain a long and healthy life with a strong immune system. It truly takes a scientist to develop the correct balance of ingredients to ensure appropriate optimum nutrition for our dogs and cats. While cats are carnivores, dogs are omnivores, requiring a balanced diet. Without the full needed balance, the body begins to break down. One area will over compensate to help a deficient area, then that area also becomes weakened, resulting in major health issues, such as broken, brittle bones, internal breakdown, auto immune diseases, loss of hair, offspring deformities, etc.
Lastly, is all that bacteria that we are spreading throughout our kitchens, when handling the raw meats on a regular basis.
The standing argument is that "In the wild, dog's consumed raw meat that they hunted." While it is true that any food in raw form has more nutrients intact, the risk of dangerous parasites does not appear a worthy trade off. Even though, in the wild, dogs did consume raw flesh, we don't really know what their average life span was, with the spread of parasite infestation, as there have never been such studies done. Our pet's are not the same wild animals as their ancestors were. Nor, is our livestock the same, as it used to be.
Comparing our domestic dogs to the wolf is like comparing the apple to the orange. In the wild, wolves eat approximately once every two weeks, consuming a very high meat protein source of diet. They also eat the contents of what was in the stomach of their prey, giving them vegetation, which is known as carbohydrates and grain. The wolf consumed little carbs as protein, yet mostly meat as protein. This high protein helped him to survive throughout harsh elements for the next couple weeks.
With the newer fad of feeding our little domestic pets, who live in warm houses, getting nowhere near the exercise that a wolf in the wild does, we have begun to lay out a plan for disaster in their long term health. How is their body going to process such high meat protein, fed several times daily?
There has not been one clinical study shown , that supports feeding a daily raw high meat diet to a domestic animal that does not need and cannot utilize such high protein. Even the wolf, who needs a higher protein, due to his activity and the elements, never eats raw meat every day.
Today, beef is a risk to feed, whether it be in food or treats, due to mad cow disease, also known as, bovine spongiform encephalopathy. It is a fatal brain disease in cattle, which is transmitted to people and/or animals that eat the infested beef. Mad cow disease continues to show itself in cases with both animals and people, throughout the food chain.

It is a special process that cooks the food at a temperature of 212 degrees, for 12 seconds, which ensures maximum nutrients to remain entact, offering optimum nutrition to the dog/cat, without the risk of parasites. What other veterinarians have to say about commercially prepard pet foods From the British Journal of Small Animal Practice
"A growing number of vets state that processed pet food is the main cause of illness and premature death in the modern dog and cat. In December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice published a paper contending that processed pet food suppresses the immune system and leads to liver, kidney, heart and other diseases. This research, initially conducted by Dr. Tom Lonsdale, was researched further by the Australian Veterinary Association and proven to be correct."
William Pollak, DVM
"Health is an inevitable by-product of natural raw foods for our pets."
"Survival is insured by commercial food; nothing more; not health, not the robustness for life."
"The results of a clinical trial suggest that 74.7% of common diseases in dogs and 63% of common diseases in cats can be eliminated without medical intervention over a period of one year with proper diet modifications and an understanding of the healing process as exhibited through healing episodes. Approaching disease from the perspective of health is the most powerful means of eliminating disease. Poor fuel makes for little momentum in life. The commercial food we are feeding' is the disease we are treating - so treat on and on, curing one disease after another, again and again."
Dr. Wendell O. Belfield, DVM
"Their pets may have diarrhea, increased flatulence, a dull hair coat, intermittent vomiting or prolonged scratching. These are common symptoms associated with commercial pet foods." In 1981, as Martin Zucker and I wrote How to Have a Healthier Dog, we discovered the full extent of negative effects that commercial pet food has on animals. In February 1990, San Francisco Chronicle staff writer John Eckhouse went even further with an expose entitled "How Dogs and Cats Get Recycled into Pet Food".
Dr. Randy Wysong, DVM
”Nutrition is serious health business. The public is not well served by exclusively feeding products from companies without any real commitment to health... or knowledge of how to even achieve that”.
"Recent studies have shown processed foods to be a factor in increasing numbers of pets suffering from cancer, arthritis, obesity, dental disease and heart disease". |
All grazing livestock animals (including the one's we use for consumption) carry many types of parasites. If these meats are fed in a raw form, we are feeding live parasites to our pet's. Parasites survive being frozen, yet will not survive a cooking process. Knowing that everything in raw form retains more nutrients, Dr. Jane has developed a "Fast Cook" process, which assures optimum nutrition, without the risk of parasites. Life's Abundance pet foods are cooked for 12 seconds at a temperature of 212 degrees for optimum nutrient retention, while also destroying any parasites. It is true that any (even the slightest) cooking does destroy some nutrient value, yet this fast cook process has been chosen by Dr. Bicks, in order to retain as much nutrition as possible, without risk of parasites. The trade off of feeding raw foods for the purpose of maximum protein, with the danger of parasite infection is not worth the risk. Some parasites will eat through the stomach lining, some travel to the brain. Once that happens, there is no reversing health issues. Raw foods certainly do not provide the fully balanced diets that an animal needs. In time that should be proven, as the animals body begins to slowly break down. Life's Abundance foods are prepared for safe oprimum health. There is not any one pet food available that is able to provide complete vitamin and nutrient needs. That is precisely why supplements are made for our pet's. Choose holistic supplements, such as HealthyPetNet's supplements, that are also formulated by Dr. Jane Bicks You should never use one brand of dry food, then a different brand of wet food, supplements, etc. The chemistry needs to remain balanced. Mixing brands could become toxic. Choose Holistic Veterinarian Formulated Life's Abundance pet food, for the life and health of your dog and cat.
